Every once in a while and totally unintentionally my brain spews out a good idea.

County Fair and Schoolwork

September 5, 2008 by Montserrat {Cranial Hiccups} 10 Comments

This last weekend was extremely busy for our family. The months of practicing with, caring for, and learning all about chickens culminated with the 4H Poultry show at our county fair on Saturday. Preparations for the fair itself started on Thursday when all the chickens had to be washed and cleaned. (Thank goodness for a neighbor who is not only wonderful and caring but she is also the girls’ 4H leader and taught them all they know about chickens because their city girl mama doesn’t know a thing!) Brownie, S their 4H leader, Semisweet

Friday we took the chickens in to the fair and the girls decorated their cages and display area. Saturday we headed back in to the fair for the showing of the chickens. Truffle did very well for her first year. She was pretty nervous though! Semisweet won Junior Grand Champion and Brownie won Junior Reserve Grand Champion. Truffle with her Blue Andalusian “Dawn”

Semisweet also won the Round Robin and her two chickens won Grand and Reserve in the Best of Heavy Breeds so she raked in the ribbons. Semisweet showing the width of the breast on her Americana “Judy”

Sunday we had church, of course, followed by a ward luncheon. I was in charge of making sure all the food was brought, tables set-up, etc. In other words I got to order everyone around. 🙂 After the luncheon we changed our clothes so we could stop by the fair and pick up the chickens during check-out time. I was exhausted when we finally got home!

Our first week of school has been wonderful. We are starting off slow because we will be leaving for a short vacation next week but then we will really get into the thick of it all. The two oldest girls were able to do well considering their school books were slowly still arriving throughout the week. They are still waiting for their Language Arts books. K12 sent Language 3 instead of Language 8 for Bon Bon. We’ve been teasing her quite a bit about that!

The rest of the girls have been doing their math, reading, copywork, and language arts everyday. We’ve also been learning about mammals for science and will be doing a small unit study on Raccoons next week. Nothing big just something fun from the 2004 Copycat Magazine. Copycat is no longer being published. My mother-in-law subscribed online to them one year and saved all of their wonderful files. It is such a great resource! Cookie has been flying through her letters. She is so ready to read. She did wonderful remembering A, B, & C as well as their sounds. She is also doing very well in writing them. We won’t start history or geography until we get back from our trip next week. I’m really hoping to be able to give more detailed weekly accounts of our schoolwork starting two weeks from now.

My memories of 4H from my childhood are totally funny. I thought it was some cool club that my friends were in and I really wanted to join – until I begged my Mom and she told me it was all about animals. Then I was totally confused as to why my friends were in this awful club where they made you learn about animals. Ahhh youth. So naive and closed-minded.

Congratulations to the girls with their birds. I love chickens, but I get the heebeejeebees with fluttering feathers and CANNOT touch them. So I am doubly impressed to see them holding them. (I make the kids do all the holding work!)

This is so cool! I have to show my kids, especially my son. He is so in to chickens right now. He spent a lot of time looking at chickens at the MN Fair.

    Congrats, girls!
