Pregnancy Enduced Remodeling

August 17, 2009 by Montserrat {Cranial Hiccups} Leave a Comment

Nothing like pregnancy hormones kicking in to make me want to remodel or redesign every room in the house. I tell myself it’s out of necessity, after all we do need to make room for the new baby which means getting rid of the office to use as another bedroom, which leads to rearranging the family room, which then leads to major decluttering and re-pairing of which girls will go in which rooms. They, of course, want to paint their new rooms and sew semi-matching quilts for their new bunk beds that my SIL is very generously building for us. Well, the list just goes on and on.

It’s actually really exciting to see some progress being made. We’ll finish cleaning out the office this afternoon. It’s downstairs next to a bedroom, both of which need new carpet. Before we put new carpet in we’ll be painting the rooms, building shelves in the closets, and installing new light fixtures.

At the same time we are going to rearrange all the stuff in the cabinets in the family room next to those bedrooms. We are going to make it into our crafting/sewing room. That gives me license to paint the cabinets. I really want to paint them like my husband’s cousin’s wife did her hutch. The walls need new coats of paint as well.

As if that isn’t enough we’ve ordered fabric to begin sewing the girls’ quilts. They just want simple blocks of colored fabric with sashing of white between similar to these beauties. Perfect for the older ones to sew themselves. I’ve ordered charm packs of Aviary for two quilts, then went to town ordering 1/2 yard cuts from the sale at marie-madeline studio for the other four quilts.

We decided to pair up the girls differently to help them develop better relationships with one another, learn from each other, etc. Up until now they’ve been paired up in birth order so I wrote down four different “pairings” threw them onto the table all folded up and Special Dark chose a paper sealing their fate. Bon Bon (13) will share a room with Fudge (6), Semisweet (12) and Brownie (10) will share a room, leaving Truffle (8) and Cookie (4) to share the last room. I then had them each individually chose a color they wanted their room painted. In each pairing one girl wanted green and one wanted blue – all similar in hues too. They are so funny! The fabrics we ordered are all greens and blues but some are vibrant while others are more pastelly so that all three bedrooms aren’t exactly the same.

I will post before and after pictures when we are all done. It better be before the baby arrives. That’s eight weeks away. I think we’ll be cutting it close.

Oh and did I mention we’ll also begin building the new kitchen/laundry room addition this fall? The old laundry room will become part of a bathroom making for a much larger divided bathroom that six girls will make good use of. Like I said….every room in the house will get a remodel. Makes me tired just writing it all down.

I need a cup of cocoa.
