Homeschooling and Sickness

February 25, 2011 by Montserrat {Cranial Hiccups} 8 Comments

Having good health has been a big blessing for our family. We rarely get sick! When we do it is usually a mild cold. No grounds for skipping school.

This past week we finally got our due. Seven of the eight kiddos are out for the count! They have sore throats and achy bodies. Poor little Hershey and Special Dark have it after being well for just three days after recovering from RSV. Me? Not sick and trying to look on the bright side. At least they all have it at once so it won’t drag out for over a month!

Needless to say with all the sickness there hasn’t been any ‘official school’ though there has been learning. The older ones have learned how to tell what an ear infection looks like when peering through an otoscope (thanks Doctor Grandpa!).

Did you know that the rectus abdominis, internal and external obliques, the transversus abdominis and intercostal muscles all get sore with a lot of coughing?

The kids have also learned that it is VERY BORING to be sick. Just laying around doing nothing but trying to sleep gets old.

I have learned that I did a good job teaching my children to do all their chores. Now that they can’t I have a LOT of work to do! And that’s hard with a sick little one that just wants to be held. Thanks to Alison I am seriously looking into getting a baby wrap. My regular baby carrier makes my back hurt.

On another homeschooling note, CurrClick just launched a homeschool charity bundle for the quake victims in New Zealand. The bundle includes over $230.00 worth of items from their publishers and can be purchased for a $20.00 donation. 100% of all proceeds from the bundle go to the New Zealand Red Cross.

Ha I so said just yesterday I wish they would teach mothers how to see/know if an ear is infected!! my four year old woke up and told me her ear hurt early the other morning. Shes had a snotty cold, but fine other than that. So I took her to the doctor and he said it was just a little pink, but not infected etc …. If ONLY I had one of those ear things to check and not bother wasting my time to go to the doctor!! lol

We’ve been sick here too! I was laughing because it all came about a few days after our “day in the life” post and our days this past week haven’t looked much like what I posted – especially the sleep part.

I’m jealous of the otoscope and think I should have purchased one years ago.

Hope all are feeling better soon and yes the baby wraps have helped this week – big kids in hammocks and little ones on me

February has just been a hard month on the health front. We have had colds, flu, ear infections and stomach bugs. It just isn’t fun and nobody gets much done. I guess when you get sick it is good to all be sick at once.

I hope you are all feeling better soon.

Montse, I’m so sorry your kidlets are still so sick. I’m delighted you liked the book. Thank you so much for the cookbook. E. did a fantastic job!

    Cocoa,

I used the pattern posted (free) on Sewmamasew for the sweet pea carrier. It’s a side-carry carrier that lets my youngest sit on my hip, where she’s most comfortable, but lets me have my arms free to work. I wouldn’t use it for chopping vegetables, but it’s a great one for keeping them close.

    Yay for baby-wearing!
I have two kids so far and my youngest is two. I STILL wrap her on my back for shopping or hikes/walks. She gets so excited when she sees the wrap that she jumps up and down and yells, “back! back!”

Mine is 6 yards of 64″ wide sturdy cotton gauze cut in half length-wise and hemmed. Love it.

Aww, poor little sickies. I only have one kid, and him being sick throws our whole routine off–I can just imagine what it must be like with more children! Hope everyone feels better soon.

I’ve had loads of problems with my children’s ears so decided to get an otoscopeonline. Its really useful for self diagnosing and also for when my little girl got a gemstone stuck in her ear!
