Every once in a while and totally unintentionally my brain spews out a good idea.

Figures of Speech

June 3, 2011 by Montserrat {Cranial Hiccups} 9 Comments

Simple and short homeschooling post today (and very, very, late). We have been painting the dining room! Today’s post comes courtesy of my 8th grade English teacher. She wrote this simple poem to help her students remember basic figures of speech and to help keep them straight.

A simile is like a song
It’s as easy to remember

A metaphor makes soft white snow
Sifted sugar in December

A little alliteration
Lets the lesson linger longer

A rake that’s been personified
Slips and hurts its finger

Hyperbole exaggerates
Her crying caused a flood

Onomatopoeia imitates
Ka-boom! Kerplunk! Ka-thud!

Hopefully it will be of some use to you too!

Your 8th grade English teacher is a genius! Thanks so much for sharing. The wheels are turning in my brain…I feel a week of writing coming up at my house sometime this summer when we are free from the conveyor belt that is public school and home where the real learning happens. :)I never checked out Latter-Day Homeschooling before-how did I miss it??? I am so excited to start!
