Every once in a while and totally unintentionally my brain spews out a good idea.

Creative Writing Day 5: Rainbow Writing

November 11, 2011 by Montserrat {Cranial Hiccups} Leave a Comment

The idea behind creative writing is to get one to use words and express ideas in a more colorful, creative way. There should be no stress about grammar or spelling. That can come later. If those are expected to early all the joy of writing is snuffed out.

Today’s project is to help children (and adults) learn to focus on their senses in an engaging manner. We will create a rainbow shape using words and expressions to describe what each color of the rainbow represents to us.

At the top of each child’s page we write the five senses: touch, sight, smell, taste, hear. We also write the word ‘experiences.’ Then going down the page we write each of the colors of the rainbow: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple. The first assignment is to write everything down about that color using the five senses and at least one experience. For instance here is what I wrote for yellow: daffodils in spring, cornbread, sitting on grandma’s lap reading a book, baby formula, Rimsky-Korsakov’s Flight of the Bumblebee, wheat stalks.

On a separate piece of paper lightly draw with pencil or a white crayon the outline of a rainbow, seven lines – one for each color. Copy what you wrote using a colored crayon or marker.

Here is what my daughter Truffle wrote in her rainbow above.

Red – cherries, letter A, comb of a chicken, Santa Claus, plate, running out of gas on the four wheeler, tomato sauce

Orange – Autumn leaves, basketball, checkered carpet, retainer, pumpkins, blinkers, Summer’s sunset, bottle

Yellow – stars, fly-swatter, dust pan, fireflies, jaundice, bees, honey, beautiful fish

Green – tractor, ruler, mug, letter X, stepping on a snake, jumping in silage

Blue – science, Hawaiian juice, flour bucket, my tears from getting left behind

Purple – snow, grapes, Huckleberry Finn, lilac trees, eyes

Be sure to visit these brilliant women during our 10 days adventure between November 7th-18th! I love these ladies and we know you will too.
