Solar Eclipse May 20, 2012

May 21, 2012 by Montserrat {Cranial Hiccups} 10 Comments

Sunday evening we were able to witness a good portion of the solar eclipse.

We were a couple hours too far north to see a full “ring of fire” but still got a good view.

We used welding helmets and lenses to look directly at the sun. The lenses make the sun green!

The shadows of the leaves were also crescent shaped.

I was trying to get the setting right on my camera in this photo. I like the two reversed eclipses from the mirror shake on my camera. You can also see the eclipse right next to the bright green sun.

Were you able to see the eclipse?

I already commented, but I thought that your kids might like this info:

Solar eclipse in Chinese is Rì quánshí or 日全食. Transliterated, it means “sun completely food.” It does kind of look like the moon took a bite out of the sun, huh?

I live close to where we should have been able to see the full ring, but it was too cloudy! Thanks so much for sharing your pictures!

No clouds perfect weather and Albuquerque was dead center for the total eclipse. Wow, the whole neighborhood was out.

Unfortunately we didn’t have welder’s masks or eclipse glasses. So we made a pinhole projector in a box and watched the progress that way. Our view wasn’t complete either, but it was pretty close. My kids enjoyed how eery looking the light outside looked during that time

    Beautiful photos!

We are fortunate to live where we were able to see the “Ring of Fire”. It was amazing, I posted some photos on my blog that I took with the Eclipse glasses over my camera lens. What an amazing experience!

I am so jealous–there wasn’t a chance of seeing it here in Seattle on our rainy day 🙁

We were in the middle of seminary graduation but got to see it for a few minutes before the sun set. Love the leaf shadow picture. That’s how I was able to ‘show’ the eclipse to my mom and my kids.

We made “eclipse glasses” out of four pairs of sunglasses. It was so amazing! (we had tried to do the pinhole thing and a few other techniques for the first half and couldn’t get anything to work, and then my little bro-in-law came home from a friends house and told us about the sunglasses trick – we got SO excited and watched almost the entire second half.)
