Cranial Hiccups

Every once in a while and totally unintentionally my brain spews out a good idea.

Best of Mothers

May 8, 2013 by Montserrat {Cranial Hiccups} 5 Comments

What color reminds you of your mother? Why?
If you could give your mom anything in the world what would it be?

These questions were asked of my older girls about nine years ago. A booklet was being compiled by the Primary children at church as gifts for Mother’s Day. A question was written at the top of the page with the children’s answers listed below.

While other children answered pink or red as the color that reminded them of their mom “because its the color of love” {oh so sweet} my children all answered brown.

Brown? Yes, brown.  Why? Because “she’s a Mexican,”  and “her skin is brown,”  and “she likes chocolate.” Oh, well, that’s okay I guess.

If you guessed that my children would like to give me a lifetime supply of chocolate you would be correct. Except one child thought “20 grandchildren” would be a bit better.

As you can imagine the booklet was quite insightful, hilarious, and yes, embarrassing for some mothers but it was heartfelt and is a treasured keepsake today.

Reminiscent of that long ago booklet LDS Living has gathered articles about mothers and motherhood and is offering it as a free e-book for Mother’s Day. Yes, free!

You can download your copy of Best of Mothers here. While it won’t be quite as personal as the booklet made by Primary children it will be just as profound, heart warming, and funny as the booklet was. Enjoy the free gift!

I am guest posting over at LDS Living today about motherhood and paying homage to my own mother and grandmother. Okay, so truth be told I was crunched for time after attending the American Mothers convention so it’s a photo essay that some of you may have seen before but it still has some profound meaning, at least for me. After reading it please come back and let me know what you think!

Your motherhood musings always help me to look beyond the mess and enjoy the moment. I am such a clean-aholic and sometimes just have to enjoy the mess of motherhood. I love that your kids chose brown. I am sure my kids would choose brown for my Mexican husband and your Guelita making tamales made me miss visiting my in-laws at Christmas.

The photo essay was lovely! Thanks for sharing! I’ve thought about writing down my memories for my mom, and having my siblings do the same.
