Cranial Hiccups

Every once in a while and totally unintentionally my brain spews out a good idea.

Five Things for Friday

September 2, 2011 by Montserrat {Cranial Hiccups} 10 Comments

This goofy picture has absolutely nothing to do with the post. I finally got copies of the whole family pictures we took in Fallon at the beginning of August. Of course, we have to do funny faces on some to keep it lively. Click on the picture to make it bigger. it’ll give you a laugh for the day!

This week has been crazy.

CRAZY!!

To summarize I thought I’d do five things for Friday. {oops! looks like it’s a loooong summary}

1.

Bon Bon and Semisweet started back to (high) school on Monday. After searching and praying, praying and searching to find a high school curriculum to meet our needs they are doing K12 online through Nevada Virtual Academy. After the trial run this week they are enjoying it. Their days are long because we are still in the middle of third crop and they are part of the raking crew. They get up at 5:30am, rake for about four hours, then come home for a quick breakfast before logging in to their classes.

As for the rest of us, technically we were supposed to officially start yesterday but school didn’t get underway until 10:30 because Brownie and Truffle were out raking too. I knew that would happen though. I distributed the new school supplies, we talked about our daily and weekly school schedules, and then made a big list of what the kids want to learn through unit studies this year.

Here’s what they collectively wrote (I’m sure you can tell what was added by the younger ones vs. the older ones):

ladybugs
butterflies
creatures in wildlife
crayons
Soap making
volcanoes
earthquakes
American Girl Dolls
Fabric – how its made
seasons
dogs
insects
cheese making
watercolor painting
shading in drawing
learn to use the wood shop tools
Indians (Native Americans)
colors – schemes, combinations, affects on moods
metal – what is it?

2.

I am loving the cooler weather we are having! As soon as we turned the calendar page to September we were treated to cooler morning and evening temperatures. The only problem is the freeze watch we had last night. Doesn’t do our corn crop any good when it gets close to freezing!

3.

We’re taking the kids to the county fair this afternoon. They each turned in entries and can’t wait to see if they won any ribbons. This will make the sixth trip to town this week. Too much! I went twice on Wednesday, a result of bad planning on my part. So much time wasted driving, driving, driving. A total of close to seven hours this week alone. That stresses me out knowing I could be spending that time on more productive things – like planning school or playing with my children.

4.

Bon Bon made Mexican Double Chocolate Chip Cookies earlier this week. I’m afraid I hate half the cookies myself. They are so good! And, apparently, very addicting.

5.

I love statcounter. Seeing how people come to land on my blog is enlightening and sometimes really funny. One feature I like is the recent keyword activity. It shows the searches people have done that took them to my blog. The great thing is if my blog showed up high on the search, statcounter will show the number it ranked on the query.

I know it’s a fuzzy screen shot. Just click to enlarge.

Pretty neat! Another feature I like is the ‘recent came from’ that shows places from around the web that linked to my blog. Pinterest brings a lot, so do different homeschooling forums.

And for Deirdre, I thought this was funny.

A link (in red) to my girls’ kerchief tutorial on a Catholic Forum discussing chapel veils. 🙂

Look for a giveaway coming this weekend to help spread the word about our Family Celebration!

I’ll be anxious to see if your girls still like k12 for high school. That’s the program that we chose for all our kids for our first year homeschooling. It seemed like a good way to transition. But, my oldest is in 7th now, so high school is just around the corner! Yikes! So far everyone is really liking it.

Oh Cocoa! That’s hysterical 🙂 I love it. I was not raised in the head-covering eras. My grandmother, though, had some beautiful lace (hand tatted) head coverings. Thanks for the laugh today. Good luck with school. I used MathUSee for our middle two as a summer review and it was wonderful. I think they learned better with that than with the school’s curriculum.

Love the list of things your kiddos want to study. We have one too-we call it our compass. I have my own and I am proud to say I have already been able to check too things off my list. 🙂 Jake’s list includes researching Black Beard, making some chemical reactions, looking at things through a microscope. 🙂 I am so excited to be homeschooling! I am so excited to be home from our extended vacation too so that I can catch up on my blog friends!!! I missed reading your blog!
